Taman Sari: Diving into the Beauty and History of Yogyakarta Water Castle

shakrankreasi.com — Located in the middle of Yogyakarta, Taman Sari is one of the most enchanting and storied historical sites. Also known as ‘Water Castle’, Taman Sari was once a royal garden built by Sultan Hamengku Buwono I in the 18th century. Nowadays, Taman Sari is a favorite destination because of its beautiful architecture.

Taman Sari’s History

Taman Sari comes from the words “taman” meaning garden and “sari” meaning beautiful or flower. The Taman Sari complex was built by Sultan Hamengku Buwono I as a tribute to his queen consort, who shared in his hardships during the Giyanti War.

In line with its purpose of entertaining the queen, the garden was nicknamed the Water Castle due to its pools and the presence of water throughout the area. Taman Sari is also known as The Fragrant Garden because of the fragrant trees and flowers planted in the gardens surrounding the buildings.

Taman Sari was the main royal garden complex, complete with artificial pools, small gardens, residential, a kitchen, a mosque, and various other supporting buildings. This complex served many purposes, from a royal family resting place and a meditation site to a fortress. In addition to meditation, Taman Sari functioned as a space for recreation, worship, and rest. Its defense system was carefully designed, including hidden underground tunnels.

Tourist Attractions

  1. Bathing Complex (Umbul Binangun)

This is the most famous part of Taman Sari. It was used by the Sultan and his family for leisure. The complex features two main pools separated by a multi-story building. Water flows from uniquely shaped animal spouts, and large decorative pots line the pool’s edges. The pools are enclosed by high walls and a watchtower—legend has it that the Sultan would choose his concubine from this tower as they bathed below.

  1. Underground Tunnels and Sumur Gumuling Mosque

The secret tunnels connecting various parts of the garden add a mysterious vibe. One of its highlights is Sumur Gumuling, an underground mosque with a circular design and unique acoustics—so the imam’s voice can be heard clearly without a microphone!

  1. Kampung Taman and Batik Center

Around the complex is a cultural village offering immersive experiences like batik-making, traditional culinary experiences, and witnessing the daily life of locals steeped in Javanese traditions.

Visitor Guidelines at Taman Sari:

  • Photography allowed for personal use. For pre-wedding or commercial shoots, prior permission is required.
